Exploration of the field of German Studies as an "interdiscipline"; analysis of a coherent body of material drawn from the social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, or other fields that helps to illuminate the German-speaking world.

Cumulative exploration of and participation in events, career development opportunities, and workshops over the course of the academic year towards professional development for a variety of career goals. Students taking this course will be assigned a grade of S (satisfactory) or U (unsatisfactory).

GERM 5320. Key Periods and Concepts in German Literature. (3 Credits)
Builds foundational knowledge for research in German literatures and cultures. Introduction to major periods in German literary history, developing familiarity with key concepts, methodologies, and terminology central to research in German literary studies.
GERM 5322. Intercultural Literature: Theories and Methods. (3 Credits)
An exploration of the possibilities and limitations of the “intercultural” as a realm or space within which to analyze vantage points, value systems, aesthetics and (inter)cultural hermeneutics in literature over time.

GERM 5324. Teaching for Intercultural Citizenship and Human Rights I. (3 Credits)
(Also offered as ALDS 5324, CLCS 5324.) Explores the role of intercultural competence and human rights education from a variety of perspectives, including applied linguistics, education, psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, and pragmatics. Through readings, online and face-to-face discussions, role-plays, scenarios, and presentations students will critically reflect on models of intercultural competence and human rights education and their relation to (student) outcomes; examine the role of social justice and human rights within the teaching of intercultural competence; and integrate and assess intercultural competence in teaching. Taught in English.
GERM 5325. Teaching for Intercultural Citizenship and Human Rights II. (3 Credits)
(Also offered as ALDS 5325, CLCS 5325.) Continued exploration of the role of intercultural competence and human rights education from a variety of perspectives, including applied linguistics, education, psychology, neuroscience, philosophy and pragmatics. Students will design a research project or curricular unit for a specific purpose in which they apply models of intercultural competence/ citizenship and human rights in practice. Taught in English.
GERM 5330. GDR Literature as World Literature. (3 Credits)
Investigates how international networks and interactions shaping GDR literature offer an alternative model for understanding World Literature today, while also evaluating East German literary production and international exchanges against critiques of World Literature. Students receive a panoramic overview of GDR literature from 1949 to its afterlife in contemporary German writing, and a grounding in World Literature Studies.

Study of a coherent body of texts drawn from the period from approximately 1890 to the present.

GERM 5350. Theater and Human Rights. (3 Credits)
(Also offered as CLCS 5350.) Exploration of theater and related performing arts as forms of artistic expression and public debate. Analysis of specific characteristics of modern and contemporary theater and exploration of theater's engagement with human rights discourse and interventions in the public sphere. Theoretical texts and recordings of performances will inform class discussions.

GERM 6415. Reframing Cold War Germany: Decolonization, Internationalism, and Memory. (3 Credits)
Postwar German culture through the East-West divide and its global entanglements, including decolonization, transnationalism, and environmental issues. Topics include the Berlin Wall, denazification, consumer culture, dissent, and reunification, with attention to their lasting impact on contemporary culture and public memory.
GERM 6425. German Culture, Migration, and Belonging. (3 Credits)
Exploration of key works of German-speaking literatures of migration organized around various approaches towards conceptualizing cultural contact in Germany. An emphasis on German literature and cinema of Turkish migration, with additional readings encompassing other transnational phenomena, including socialist internationalism, postcolonialism, and globalization.
GERM 6455. Gender, Sexuality, and Activism in German Contexts. (3 Credits)
The history of gender and sexuality studies, including LGBTQ+ and masculinity studies, in German-speaking cultures. Emphasis on interdisciplinary engagement and the history of discourses regarding policies, practices and human rights.
