Common Curriculum
The Common Curriculum is UConn's general education curriculum. It provides academic breadth and depth with a set of intellectually rigorous and challenging courses that foster skills and attributes associated with leadership and global citizenship.
Every undergraduate student1 in a baccalaureate degree program in the University, on all campuses, must complete the Common Curriculum. The Common Curriculum requires students to complete six Topics of Inquiry and three Competencies. All students must complete a minimum of 40 credits of coursework approved for the Common Curriculum.
By completing the Common Curriculum, all UConn undergraduate students will gain experience with different ways of knowing and many kinds of knowledge, and will enter society and their professions with a strong sense of moral, ethical, and social responsibility. The Common Curriculum prepares leaders and global citizens, who need to be able to communicate with and cultivate compassion with those outside their own majors, disciplines, professions, communities, and cultures and to make connections between their own knowledge and perspectives and those of others.
- 1
Undergraduate students with bachelor's degrees from institutions that have been accredited by regional accreditation agencies (e.g. NECHE) are exempt from the Common Curriculum Requirements. Undergraduate students with associate degrees from CT State Community College that are designated as "transfer-oriented" within the Transfer Policy are exempt from the Common Curriculum Requirements.
School and College Requirements
Some schools and colleges have additional requirements that students must complete. Students should review the requirements of their school or college's section of this catalog for details.
Topics of Inquiry
Students must pass at least three credits of coursework in each of the six Topics of Inquiry (TOI):
- TOI-1: Creativity: Design, Expression, Innovation
- TOI-2: Cultural Dimensions of Human Experiences
- TOI-3: Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice
- TOI-4: Environmental Literacy
- TOI-5: Individual Values and Social Institutions
- TOI-6: Science and Empirical Inquiry (at least one course must be a laboratory course designated as TOI-6L)
Requirements
- At least three credits must be passed in each Topic of Inquiry (many courses fulfill two TOI).
- Students must also satisfy a Focus requirement by successfully completing either nine credits in a single TOI or nine credits within a Theme.
- Common Curriculum courses may be counted toward the major.
- Including the Focus requirement, students must pass at least 21 credits of TOI courses.
- The 21 credits of TOI courses must be from at least six different subject areas as designated by subject code (e.g., ANTH). For cross-listed courses, students may count any subject code under which the course is offered toward this requirement regardless of the subject code under which they register for the course.
- Students must complete at least one laboratory course designated as TOI-6L.
- No more than six credits with the INTD prefix may be elected by any student to meet the Common Curriculum Requirements.

Themes
To satisfy the Focus requirement of the Common Curriculum, students may take nine credits within a set of courses that comprise a faculty-designed Theme spanning multiple disciplines. Themes are optional; if a student does not wish to complete a Theme, they may still satisfy their Focus requirement by completing nine credits in a single Topic of Inquiry. See Approved Themes for details of available Themes.
Theme Guidelines
- Themes may contain more than three approved courses, but students are required to complete only nine credits of approved courses to satisfy a Theme.
- There are no restrictions on which courses within a Theme students can or must take. The courses can be at any level or in any combination of Topics of Inquiry.
- Themes do not appear on student transcripts or diplomas.
Approved Themes
Food, Water, and Natural Resources for the Future
Natural resources such as air, water, plants and animals, soil, and fossil fuels provide ecosystem services that benefit modern societies. Human use of these resources is tied to benefits as well as environmental impacts that require careful management for their sustained use in the future. The courses in this theme provide an overview of the natural resources and how we use them to meet our food, water, and energy needs of a growing global population. Students will also learn about the environmental and human health effects related to natural resource use. The courses feature social, economic, and governmental aspects related to sustainable natural resource management and environmental protections.

People and the Seas
Interdisciplinary exploration of the relationships between human communities and marine and maritime environment. Students will explore these relationships through studies in political science, social sciences, natural sciences, history, economics, and natural resource management.

Utopia, Imaginaries, Techno-Futurisms, and Rights
Past and present portrayals of an ideal or utopian future, as imagined by architects, authors, bioethicists, scientists, community organizers, philosophers, and artists. The theme wrestles with the idea that while imagination can be a liberatory practice, it might also lead to entrenched injustices

Competencies
The Common Curriculum requires students to complete competencies in quantitative skills, second language proficiency, and writing.
Quantitative (Q) Competency
All students must pass two Q courses, which may also satisfy Topic of Inquiry requirements. One Q course must be from Mathematics or Statistics. Students should discuss with their advisor how best to satisfy these requirements based on their background, prior course preparation, and career aspirations. Students whose high school skills need strengthening should be encouraged to complete MATH 1011Q Introductory College Algebra and Mathematical Modeling as preparation for other Q courses. To receive credit for MATH 1011Q Introductory College Algebra and Mathematical Modeling, it must be passed before successful completion of any other Q course. In some cases, advisors may recommend postponing registration in a Q course until after the student has completed a semester of course work at the University.
Second Language Competency
Second Language competency is established by either:
- passing the third-year high school level course in a language other than English, or
- attaining a Seal of Bilteracy, or
- passing the second-semester course in the first-year sequence of college level study in a language other than English.
When the years of study have been split between high school and earlier grades, the requirement is met if the student has successfully completed the third-year high school level course. With anything less than that, the student must pass the second-semester course in the first-year sequence of college-level study in a single language.
Writing (W) Competency
All students must pass either ENGL 1007 Seminar and Studio in Writing and Multimodal Composition or ENGL 1010 Seminar in Academic Writing or ENGL 1011 Seminar in Writing through Literature. Additionally, all students must pass two writing-intensive (W) courses, which may also satisfy Topic of Inquiry requirements. One of these must be at the 2000 level and associated with the student’s major. Approved courses for each major are listed in their sections of this catalog. (Note: ENGL 1007 Seminar and Studio in Writing and Multimodal Composition or ENGL 1010 Seminar in Academic Writing or ENGL 1011 Seminar in Writing through Literature is a prerequisite to all writing-intensive courses).
