The Ph.D. program trains individuals to become independent researchers who contribute to the field of oceanography by creating new knowledge through original research. Ph.D. graduates develop deep expertise, advanced critical thinking, and skills in research, analysis, and communication, preparing them for careers in academia, industry, science management, and other research-intensive roles.  Entry into the Ph.D. program usually requires a Master’s degree, but particularly well-prepared students may enter directly from a Bachelor of Science program.

Requirements

Requires 30 course credits plus 15 credits of GRAD 6950 Doctoral Dissertation Research or GRAD 6960 Full-Time Doctoral Research in addition to six related area credits. Doctoral students who have already earned a Master’s in the field of study or closely related field must earn 15 credits beyond the Master’s plus 15 credits of GRAD 6950 Doctoral Dissertation Research or GRAD 6960 Full-Time Doctoral Research in addition to six related area credits.

Learning Objectives

1. Demonstrate appropriate breadth and depth of oceanographic knowledge, including major topics such as physical, chemical, biological, and geological oceanography, as well as key theories and current challenges of the field. Exhibit specialized expertise in an ocean-related sub-field sufficient to design and conduct substantive independent research.
2. Use field-based, laboratory-based, analytical, or numerical methods and techniques ethically and professionally to apply oceanographic knowledge, critically analyze data, interpret results, and, as appropriate to the degree, create new knowledge that contributes to the advancement of ocean science.
3. Communicate proficiently and effectively to a scientific or non-scientific audience, verbally and in writing, presenting a structured, coherent academic presentation or evidence-based argument that coherently summarizes their research, relevant literature, and its significance at an appropriate level.
