The primary goal of the M.S. program in Geological Sciences is to train scientists, professionals, and educators in the global earth science community. Students learn a range of analytical and technical skills needed to solve complex problems and how to apply those skills for the benefit of the planet and its inhabitants. Students contribute new earth science knowledge through supervised original research and peer-reviewed publication. Students who complete the M.S. typically enter careers in non-governmental agencies focused on environment, water, and natural resources or go on to pursue a Ph.D.

Requirements

The M.S. and the Ph.D. requirements in Geological Sciences conform to the Graduate School requirements as outlined in the Academic Regulations section of this catalog. All M.S. and Ph.D. students are required to pass ERTH 5000 Geoscience Core Course; additional course requirements are determined by the student’s advisory committee consistent with the minimum requirements specified by the Graduate School. There are no specific requirements for the areas of concentration beyond advisor approval.

1. Knowledge: Demonstrate appropriate breadth and depth of Earth Science knowledge and comprehension of the major topics, theories, and issues of the discipline.
2. Applied skills: Uses, disaggregates, reformulates and/or adapts principal ideas, techniques or methods of the Earth Sciences ethically, professionally, and based on best practices of the discipline.
3. Communication: Communicate proficiently and effectively to a specialist or non-specialist audience, verbally and in writing, a coherent argument or explanation summarizing aspects of the Earth Sciences.
