550. Urban Plant Systems: Construction and Maintenance

Prerequisites: Recommended preparation: SAPL 120,410,430. Not open for credit to students who have passed SAPL 740.

Grading Basis: Graded

Technical information on the effective construction and maintenance of planted systems. Structural and functional components of plant systems. Provision of ecosystem services. Overviews of a wide spectrum of planted systems including streetscaping, green roofs and green walls, rain gardens and bioretention, and phytoremediation systems. Techniques of soil modification. Plant selection. Establishment and maintenance of woody and herbaceous plants: planting, preservation, pruning, mulching, irrigation, and fertilization. Taught with SPSS 3550.
