A cultural history of France and its colonial empire through political, social, artistic and literary revolutions and scandals. Topics include: Impressionism and the shock of the new, the Eiffel Tower scandal, Nazi occupation and the resistance, U.S. cultural imperialism, feminism, immigration and the crisis of national identity.
